AI can prevent Covid-19 in the future

Epidemic such as Covid-19 is difficult to control when not having solutions right away. However, in the future, AI is expected to make it easier.
These days, it might be too late for this new technology to prevent the Covid-19 outbreak. Otherwise, we can believe in AI ability for the next potential outbreaks in the future. AI is excellent in connecting data to detect what is the next effective method or experiment.
Back to the early period of the Covid-19, Big data only had a little information of the initial emerging of virus Covid-19 in China. No important information was a huge challenge to Big data. However, researchers’ genome creating of the new virus in only few weeks for the first reported case was very promising because it showed that we got more information than 2 months ago.
Andrew Hopkins, CEO of Excientia, an AI start-up in Britain, one of specialists is studying AI to look for medicine for some diseases. Mr. Hopkins said that the process for new methods started from theory to clinical trials at least 18 to 24 months by AI. Exscientia designed a new compound for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) that was tested in the laboratory less than 1 year of the research phase. This speed is five times faster than the average ones.
Healx, an AI biotechnology company in Cambridge (England), also used machine learning to find new usage for existing medicines.
Besides, every company has a group of anthropologists working with AI in process instruction. Specifically, Exscientia provides algorithms to find the compound while Healx gives AI’s predictions to analysts to pick a suitable solution.
AI has already supplied medicine for some popular diseases. According to Bloomberg, on February 20th, a group of researchers at Massachusetts Technology Institution used AI to detect a new antibiotic compound that could kill a series of complicated bacteria.
However, the biggest challenge of AI is clinical trial. Every kind of medicine needs to be tested strictly before filling prescriptions for patients. This process requires a lot of time until receiving authorities’ agreement.
Another difficulty is talented staff. “It is hard to find someone who has both AI and biology knowledge. In addition, it is not easy for big companies to make decision”, Irina Haivas, a partner of Atomico and a former surgeon at Healx said.
