Technologies to transform business operations during the pandemic (Part 2)

Besides 5G, IoT and automation, key technologies such as AI and data alternation will play a crucial role in business operations.

Within a short period, companies have embraced remote working for their workers, pushing organizational improvements that would have taken years to prepare and carry out. This changed the attention of the company to the importance of adopting technologies in its operations across industries.

The growth of the open data movement and the realization that public sharing of data provides social and economic benefits might contribute to the opening up of many of these knowledge sources for corporations to innovate. Data exchanges like Terbine and Dawex are building the infrastructure required to inject liquidity into this evolving market.

AI and alternative data

Small enterprises have been lagging behind in harnessing the economic advantages of AI due to the shortage of sufficient data inputs for their algorithms. Only big companies were able to leverage these technologies since they had internal databases resulting from their activities or could afford to purchase data as needed. However, data ownership is not necessarily meant to create data-driven goods and services, as some creative uses of data indicate.

A common approach to the use of AI is data synthesis when developers search for rich datasets to train their programs. Continental, a car component supplier, is estimated to create an AI-based program that can produce 5,000 miles of vehicle test data per hour. Since collecting data with an actual vehicle would have taken as long as 20 days, Intel Labs and Darmstadt University in Germany have utilized the video game Grand Theft Auto to do such thing, helping help train autonomous vehicles.

To evaluate the effects of COVID-19 on the economy, specifically decide which stocks to purchase or sell, many major banks have been trying new approaches regarding data sources. For example, it is better to buy and leverage travel websites, insurance companies and job sites than those from the monthly government statistics and companies’ financial reports.

In response to challenges posed by the current lockdowns, companies are realizing the vital role of evaluating and predicting the future of the economy post COVID. Enterprises now are putting more time and effort into utilizing and assessing the data to make better predictions as businesses will not be back to the normal before the pandemic.

5G Will Accelerate The Digital Transformation of Healthcare During The Pandemic

5G technology has already been in trial in many countries to combat COVID-19, especially in the healthcare sector.

The pandemic is having tremendous impacts on every aspect of our daily life including healthcare. The epidemic, thus, has been the push for the digital transformation of the medical and pharmaceutical sectors. Telemedicine seems to be the new normal of the medical checkup and diagnosis since people try their best to avoid any in-person meeting with the doctors.

Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm President, stressed the crucial role of mobility in the field, bringing potentially great benefits for patients who are inconvenienced to access healthcare services during the pandemic. Added to that, 5G could accelerate the effort to transform the healthcare system online with the availability of existing technologies. By adopting 5G, the regular checkups and doctor visits could be made easy and efficient remotely.

Although telehealthcare has been adopted by hospitals in some ways before, it is the COVID-19 that encourages transforming healthcare online. The drive for telehealth along with 5G technology could create solutions to combat COVID-19, providing care for patients at risk of virus contraction. Speed, coverage and responsiveness are three aspects that 5G is predicted to boost in wireless networks. The advancement in mobile network technology such as 5G is essential in sharing information about medical documents, especially sophisticated imaging and real-time reports. The low latency of the new technology is said to be the greatest advantage that will smoothen and speed up the transfer of data.

Telemedicine is replacing in-person care amid the pandemic

Not only does it provide care that otherwise would not be accessible to patients in need, but telemedicine is also a safety measure for medical staff to avoid the risk of virus contraction.

Many people with health problems, especially chronic illnesses are going to struggle during the pandemic, provided that we are all following the stay-at-home policies. But the fear of catching COVID-19 and the restriction order should not keep people with serious non-COVID-19 symptoms from seeking medical care. Delaying care for medical emergencies can be life-threatening or prone to other severe complications.

And this problem can be solved by telemedicine as told by health care executive Kerry Palakanis. "For people with chronic health conditions, we don't want them coming into the traditional health care environment and exposing themselves to COVID," she said.

The executive director for Connected Care at Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, Palakanis, stressed the benefits of remote medical care to patients with critical conditions that need regular follow-up visits and patients living in remote areas where hospitals are inconvenient to access during this time.

On the other hand, experts have concerned the challenge of implementing the new digital approach due to the public perception of not having in-person meetings with a doctor.

The Innovation of a New Robotic System Remotely Controlling Ventilators in the COVID-19 Pandemic

With the appearance of a new robotic system, the risk of staff exposure in hospital, specifically COVID-19 pandemic is eliminated.

A new robotic system supports medical staff to remotely operating bedside machines, especially ventilators, from outside care rooms of patients who are suffering from some infectious diseases such as COVID-19.

Although the system, developed by a team of a university and medicine researchers, is still being tested, initial trials have represented how it could be utilized to help hospitals and medical staff preserve protective gear, limit cross contamination and provide more time for clinical work.

The robotic device is affixed to the ventilator's touch screen with a horizontal bar secured across the top edge. The bar serves as a stationary track for the back-and-forth movement of two connected vertical bars that extend the full height of the screen. As the vertical bars sweep across the screen, a stylus they carry moves up and down according to its commands, similar to how an Etch A Sketch moves its drawing tool along an X-Y axis. A camera connected to the top bar sends an image of the screen to the operator's tablet outside the room.

During a recent test at the hospital, staff could use the tablet to change oxygen percentage and volume delivered by a ventilator attached to a mannequin in an adjoining room. In the context of the epidemic, the appearance of this system is a great contribution to the prevention of COVID-19 pandemic.

Conversational AI Helps Companies To Stay Competitive In Covid-19 Pandemic

Conversational AI is the key component for enterprises to grow sustainably and stay competitive for greater efficiencies.

The pandemic dramatically affects the enterprise’s operations, especially since many contact centers have to close because they cannot cope with the customers’ demand significantly increasing while social distance and the decrease in the workforce.

As a direct result of Covid-19 pandemic, many companies accelerate their digital transformation and automation strategies not only to operate more efficiently but also to avoid disruptions. Because of the flexibility and scalability, a lot of the latest technologies are applied in business activities, especially conversational AI.

Understanding Conversational AI: As Chat Enabled Customer Service | Hacker Noon

Conversational AI is speech-based assistants and chatbots to automate communication and create personalized customer experiences via applications, websites or tech devices. It offers humanlike interactions by recognizing voice, text, touch or gesture input with different languages.

A research firm said that "Conversational AI technology is reshaping the customer experience in two ways. First, some customer touchpoints are taken over by the CAIP (Conversational AI platform), freeing up human agents to engage in more value-adding activities that improve the customer outcome. Second, the move to a CAIP actually drives improvement in the customer experience”.

Conversational AI helps companies to avoid the risk of bottlenecks, automatically resolve even the complex problems happening in the customer service process. The capable of seamless integration into backend systems to deliver fast, rich and meaningful customer experience through preferred language.

The main driving force for AI-powered devices in response to the Covid-19 pandemic is to reduce chatbot development cost, deploy 24/7 omni-channel and enhance customer service support.

Lastly, it cannot be denied that the Covid-19 pandemic has totally changed the operation of work and social life. But more than anything, the epidemic has promoted the digital process in businesses, and Conversational AI is the key component for enterprises to grow sustainably and stay competitive for greater efficiencies.
