Nowadays, a lot of tools are used to change and reflect images that many people can not recognize the difference on the other side of the mirror. But Artificial Intelligence can pick up many clues that are difficult for people to notice. AI can differentiate between original images and reflections easily with 60% to 90% accuracy, depending on the kinds of images used to train the algorithm.
To discover how AI works, the researchers developed heat map technology to indicate the parts of the images that interest the algorithm. The study showed that AI focusing on wristwatches, shirt collars (buttons tend to be on the left side), faces and phones - which most people tend to carry in their right hand. Then they did another study focusing on faces and found that the heat map lit up on areas such as the hair part, eye gaze and beards. Although the researchers don’t understand what information can be found in beards, they hypothesized that the way people comb or shave their faces could reveal handedness.
This study helps to examine how reflected images different from the originals and reveal information about prejudice in machine learning that might lead to inaccurate results. Furthermore, the findings with implications help to train machine learning models and detect faked images.
