A group of leading researchers and scientists are using deep learning to make predictions of critical COVID-19 cases.
Around the world, scientists are doing incredible work to enhance our understanding of COVID-19. Thanks to their findings, medications nowadays have been discovered to increase our overall immunity and increase the likelihood of surviving the virus.
According to Nature - a scientific journal, around 6.5% of COVID-19 cases have a “worrying trend of sudden progression to critical illness”. Of these cases, the fatality rate is as high as 49%.
While most nations seemingly reach the end of the first wave of COVID-19, the possibility of a second threatens. Many experts forecast there will be another hit during the winter months; when hospitals already struggling with seasonal viruses, and it is best that we are prepared.
One of the biggest challenges with COVID-19 is deciding which patients are most at risk and need more resources for their care. During the peak of the outbreak in Italy, doctors reportedly had to make heartbreaking decisions over whom they should put more attention to due to limited resources.

The research team was created with a mission to build a deep learning-based system that can predict whether a patient is likely to become a critical case. These pieces of information would be invaluable in making sure the patient gets early intervention to improve their chances of surviving the virus.
Trained on data from 1590 patients from 575 medical centres, the deep learning model has further validation from 1393 patients. Due to limited data, this tool is for research purpose and have yet to shift to clinical trial stages. However, researchers and scientists are making great efforts to make it happen.
