Human trafficking now affects every nation in the world, a complex and heartbreaking issue. In fact, an estimated 20 to 40 million people are enslaved globally, and criminals make about $150 billion a year.
This problem is difficult to fully solved, but what if emerging technologies like Blockchain and increased data sharing can make it harder for criminals to find victims, and make it easier and faster for local government to rescue people.
Human trafficking victims are often seduced by promises of a lucrative, stable job or love relationships. In addition, there are young people who are homeless, or victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, war, conflict or discrimination in society, and they are more often targeted by human traffickers.
We are living in a growing digital age, the notion that every citizen should have a digital ID is not so far away as it was a few decades ago.
A person's digital identification is created on a private Blockchain using unique biometric information, such as fingerprints or iris scanning. Once these information and data are stored on the Blockchain system, the information cannot be changed and cannot be tampered with, meaning traffickers will not be able to forge or change the identity of victims, which is a method commonly used by human traffickers to bring victims through border control.
Importantly, Blockchain technology is also decentralized, meaning that embedded data is much safer than centralized servers.
Blockchain is a borderless technology. Blockchain ID documentation and tracking can take place anywhere, as long as relevant agencies cooperate and coordinate in their commitment to enter the data correctly.
The industry is still on the rise, but Blockchain's applications in addressing current social issues, such as dealing with human trafficking, is feasible and sustainable.
