Internet of Things in Vietnam: Current situation and development solutions
Despite achieving some initial achievements, Vietnam's Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem exists some inadequacies such as: there is no real IoT application that has a strong impact on social life. Although the IoT market is "hot", hardware and software suppliers are mainly foreign partners...To exploit the potential of IoT development in Vietnam, we need a common roadmap and policies to all elements of the IoT ecosystem; reference foreign experience in building a national research and development (R&D) system on IoT; Creating some pioneering projects to improve competitiveness.
Regarding the market, IoT in Vietnam is a "hot" field, attracting many technology companies to participate in research and production. In addition, many other applications are in beta and require more time to mature and market. However, among the large-scale implementation projects of IoT, the majority of solutions are provided by foreign businesses.
Vietnam does not have any real IoT applications that are having a strong influence on social life. In the coming time, applications in the field of smart transportation such as non-stop toll collection, traffic cameras, technology taxis are predicted to be IoT-related applications. Potential fields such as e-health, smart agriculture, smart real estate will need more time to have IoT applications suitable for Vietnam.
In general, the overall overview of Vietnam's IoT ecosystem is gradually being completed. Initially, a number of IoT applications have been implemented. However, to exploit the development potential, Vietnam needs to implement some basic solutions:
Firstly, forming an innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem, which emphasizes the role of the state in creating conditions to support and promote the economic impact of IoT industry in the fields; building communication network infrastructure with 5G generation; building and unifying IoT standards; enhance security, safety, security.
Secondly, it is necessary to have a common roadmap and policies for all components of the IoT ecosystem for the parties to "shake hands" to develop. It can be said that the research and development issues on IoT cover a very wide range. It is not limited to a specific technology of information and communication technology but covers almost all fields from hardware technology, software, communication technology, management. Network management, database. Not only that, it is also related to techniques and technologies of other fields such as automation, precision engineering, environmental technology, agriculture and other industries. Therefore, to achieve the goals that IoT aims to require research cooperation in many different fields to solve the problems, to create platforms, applications of IoT services.
Third, refer to foreign experiences in building a national system of research and development on IoT. Several countries in the region, have formed a national IoT research and development system, as a result of the 13th Five-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan 2016- 2020. That system includes businesses such as switchboards and distributors that provide IoT system development and operations. Universities and research institutes focus on researching key technologies and standards organizations responsible for setting standards for IoT across the country.
Fourthly, to build competitive advantage, the Government plays an indispensable role in creating a number of pioneering projects to improve the capacity of small and medium-sized enterprises in order to create competitiveness in the market. domestic market, as well as international market orientation. IoT is in the early stage of development, has not been completely shaped, especially the standards in connectivity, security and the number of IoT devices for the Vietnam market are still low, not attractive enough for firms. International focus on providing comprehensive solutions. In this context, we need to consider joining the IoT value chain. This requires sectors, levels and businesses to actively participate in.
