Companies using software
robots to automate repetitive, mundane and rules-based tasks report that they
are seeing payoff in various ways, according to a new study.
Robotic processautomation is being used across sectors including finance, manufacturing, telecommunications
and retail, in divisions ranging from IT departments to human resources and
accounting. The bots—some of which include artificial intelligence—perform
tasks ranging from transferring information to disparate databases to compiling
reports.
Early adopters of the
technology are finding positive return on investment within 18 months of
deployment, according to a Computer Economics Technology Trends 2019 study
released this week.
About 12% of the
approximately 250 companies surveyed said they had adopted some sort of RPA
project. Of that group, 21% said they were planning on investing more in RPA
over the next 18 months, according to the study. About half of the companies
using RPA said they received a positive return on investment within 18 months
of deployment and half reported breaking even, according to the study.
Companies surveyed included businesses across many sectors, between $20 million
and more than $1 billion in annual sales.
RPA includes advanced
software bots that are built with machine-learning algorithms to perform tasks
such as object recognition. Others, though, don’t require AI because they are
designed to complete rules-based tasks. Software bots reside either on a server
or in the cloud and are being built by technical staff at enterprises and
professional services firms, using RPA software platforms from vendors. RPA
programs are generally being overseen by enterprise technology executives,
including chief innovation officers and chief information officers.
